🌼 Create Connections through Conversations this August

Over the past few months, we've discovered that Mandarin doesn't need to happen during a lesson. It can happen in little moments while getting dressed, observing the weather, having a meal together, and more.
By now, your child has heard many familiar words and phrases woven naturally into everyday life.
This month, instead of focusing on learning new vocabulary, we're helping children use Mandarin to connect with the people around them.
Because language isn't just about knowing words.
It's about sharing ideas, asking questions, listening to others, and feeling confident enough to join the conversation.
The good news? Children don't need long sentences to become confident communicators. Sometimes, one thoughtful phrase is all it takes to start.
💬 Why Conversations Matter
Children learn to communicate by experiencing real conversations.
Each interaction teaches children that Mandarin isn't just something they learn, it's something they use.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (Age 0–5): Simple Conversations
Young children don't need to hold long conversations. Instead, focus on short exchanges they'll hear every day. As they become familiar with these phrases, they'll begin joining in naturally.
New Conversation Words
请进。 (qǐng jìn.) — Come in.
请坐。 (qǐng zuò.) — Please sit.
请等一下。 (qǐng děng yí xià.) — Please wait a moment.
没关系。 (méi guān xi.) — That's okay.
不用谢。 (bú yòng xiè.) — You're welcome.
A conversation with a visitor may start with:
请进！(qǐng jìn!) — Come in!
请坐。(qǐng zuò.) — Please sit.
🎲 Activity: Family Café
Turn your dining table into a pretend café where one family member becomes the café owner while everyone else is a customer. Encourage your child to welcome guests, offer pretend food and practise polite expressions throughout the game.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (0–5)
Try using:
请进！(qǐng jìn!) — Come in!
请坐。(qǐng zuò.) — Please sit.
请等一下。(qǐng děng yí xià.) — Please wait a moment.
谢谢！(xiè xie!) — Thank you!
不用谢。(bú yòng xiè.) — You're welcome.
🧒 Mandarin EXPLORER (Age 6-12)
Children can become the café host by using slightly longer expressions:
请给我一杯水。(qǐng gěi wǒ yì bēi shuǐ.) — Please give me a glass of water.
请慢用。(qǐng màn yòng.) — Enjoy your meal.
谢谢你的帮忙。(xiè xie nǐ de bāng máng.) — Thank you for your help.
不用客气。(bú yòng kè qi.) — Don't mention it.
太好了！(tài hǎo le!) — That's wonderful!

🧒 Mandarin EXPLORER (Age 6–12): Asking Questions
As children grow, so does their curiosity. Questions become a natural part of conversation, where instead of simply answering questions, children can begin asking them.
Useful Question Words & Phrases
哪一个？(nǎ yí gè?) — Which one?
这是谁的？(zhè shì shéi de?) — Whose is this?
怎么样？(zěn me yàng?) — What do you think?
你猜猜看。(nǐ cāi cāi kàn.) — Have a guess.
你为什么这么认为？(nǐ wèishéme zhème rènwéi?) — Why do you think that?
These simple question phrases encourage children to think, observe and explain their ideas.
🎲 Activity: Mystery Bag
Place a few familiar household objects into a bag without letting your child see them.
Take turns asking questions and giving clues before revealing what's inside.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (0–5)
Practise simple discovery phrases:
里面有什么？(lǐ miàn yǒu shén me?) — What's inside?
这是……(zhè shì...) — This is...
打开看看！(dǎ kāi kàn kan!) — Open and see!
找到了！(zhǎo dào le!) — Found it!
再试一次。(zài shì yí cì.) — Try again.
🧒 Mandarin EXPLORER (6–12)
Older children can lead the game by asking:
这是谁的？(zhè shì shéi de?) — Whose is this?
哪一个？(nǎ yí gè?) — Which one?
你猜猜看。(nǐ cāi cāi kàn.) — Have a guess.
怎么样？(zěn me yàng?) — What do you think?
你为什么这么认为？(nǐ wèishéme zhème rènwéi?) — Why do you think that?
Encourage children to explain their answers rather than simply guessing. Even if they answer mostly in English, hearing the Mandarin question words repeatedly helps them become familiar with everyday conversation patterns.

🎉 Playing With Friends
Language becomes even more meaningful when children use it with others.
Whether cousins visit, neighbours come over, or siblings are building a tower together, Mandarin becomes more than vocabulary — it becomes a way to share ideas, solve problems and encourage one another.
The goal isn't perfect pronunciation. It's giving children the confidence to join in.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (Age 0-5)
As children play together, introduce simple phrases they can use while taking turns and helping one another.
New Play Phrases
给你。(gěi nǐ.) — Here you go.
轮到你了。(lún dào nǐ le.) — It's your turn.
好厉害！(hǎo lì hai!) — Amazing!
小心一点。(xiǎo xīn yì diǎn.) — Be careful.
我们一起完成吧！(wǒmen yì qǐ wán chéng ba!) — Let's finish it together!
Try using them naturally during play:
给你。(gěi nǐ.) — Here you go.
轮到你了！(lún dào nǐ le!) — It's your turn!
好厉害！(hǎo lì hai!) — Wow, great job!

Older children are ready to solve problems and encourage one another while they play.
Introduce these useful teamwork phrases:
我来吧。(wǒ lái ba.) — I'll do it.
我需要帮忙。(wǒ xū yào bāng máng.) — I need help.
没问题。(méi wèn tí.) — No problem.
做得很好！(zuò de hěn hǎo!) — Well done!
我知道了。(wǒ zhī dào le.) — I understand now.
These expressions help children communicate naturally instead of relying on single-word answers.
🎲 Activity: Team Challenge
Choose something to build together using LEGO®, blocks, magnetic tiles, or recycled materials.
As you build, encourage children to use Mandarin whenever they need help or want to encourage someone else.
For younger children, model simple phrases like:
给你。(gěi nǐ.) — Here you go.
轮到你了。(lún dào nǐ le.) — It's your turn.
我们一起完成吧！(wǒmen yì qǐ wán chéng ba!) — Let's finish it together!
Older children can practise longer conversations:
我来吧。(wǒ lái ba.) — I'll do it.
我需要帮忙。(wǒ xū yào bāng máng.) — I need help.
没问题！(méi wèn tí!) — No problem!
When the challenge is complete, celebrate together with:
做得很好！(zuò de hěn hǎo!) — Well done!

📖 Sharing Stories Together
Everyday conversations don't need to happen only during play.
Dinner time, car rides, and bedtime are wonderful opportunities to pause, reflect, and listen to one another.
By asking one simple question each day, children learn that Mandarin can also be used to share thoughts, opinions, and experiences.
🎲 Activity: Family Chat Time
Choose one moment each day — perhaps during dinner or before bed — and invite everyone to answer the same question.
There are no right or wrong answers as the goal is simply to keep the conversation going.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (0–5)
Begin with simple prompts:
今天好吗？(jīn tiān hǎo ma?) — Was today good?
真的吗？(zhēn de ma?) — Really?
我知道了。(wǒ zhī dào le.) — I understand.
我也要！(wǒ yě yào!) — Me too!
太棒了！(tài bàng le!) — That's awesome!
🧒 Mandarin EXPLORER (6–12)
Encourage older children to share opinions rather than one-word answers.
Try introducing:
我最喜欢…(wǒ zuì xǐ huān...) — My favourite was...
我希望…(wǒ xī wàng...) — I hope...
我发现…(wǒ fā xiàn...) — I noticed / realised / discovered...
我觉得很有趣。(wǒ jué de hěn yǒu qù.) — I think it's interesting.
下次我们可以…(xià cì wǒ men kě yǐ...) — Next time we can...
You could ask questions like:
今天最开心的事是什么？(jīn tiān zuì kāi xīn de shì shì shén me?)What was the happiest thing that happened today?
你今天发现了什么？(nǐ jīntiān fāxiànle shénme?)What did you notice today?
我们下次可以做吗?(wǒmen xià cì kěyǐ zuò ma?)Can we do it next time?
Parents can answer too, showing that conversations are something everyone shares together.
