April Outdoors: Growing Mandarin Through Weather

In March, we focused on relating Mandarin to things we notice internally — feelings, helping children say things like 开心 (kāi xīn) and 不开心 (bù kāi xīn).
In April, something shifts again.
The air feels a little cooler.
The sun is softer.
Some days are still warm… and some mornings feel surprisingly chilly.
In places like Melbourne, April often sits in between seasons — not quite summer, not quite winter. One day you might say 热 (rè, hot), and the next, you’re reaching for a jacket with chattering teeth.
And that’s exactly what makes April perfect for Mandarin.
Because the ever-changing weather is perfect for weaving new Mandarin vocabulary into your child’s day.
🌤️ The Power of “Look!” in a Changing Season
If there’s one word to carry with you this month, it’s still:
看!(kàn) — Look!
But now, what you’re looking at changes day by day.
On a warm afternoon:
看,太阳!(kàn tài yáng) — Look, the sun!
On a windy school run:
风很大! (fēng hěn dà) — It’s very windy!
On those cooler April mornings:
今天有点冷! (jīn tiān yǒu diǎn lěng) — It’s a little cold today!
And on the occasional rainy day:
下雨了!(xià yǔ le) — It’s raining!
Use the world around you to teach your child to observe and relate to things in a Mandarin manner.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (Age 0-5)
At this age, children don’t need explanations — they just need repeated experiences, and April’s changing weather makes this easy.
Simple words to rotate through:
热 (rè) — Hot
冷 (lěng) — Cold
风 (fēng) — Wind
下雨 (xià yǔ) — Rain
太阳 (tài yáng) — Sun
On different days, you might say:
热吗? (rè ma) — Hot?
冷吗? (lěng ma) — Cold?
有风! (yǒu fēng) — Windy!
Even if they just feel it, that’s enough.
🎲 The “Hot or Cold” Game
As you step outside, pause and ask:
热还是冷? (rè hái shì lěng?)
Hot or cold?
Let them guess even before they feel it, encouraging their curiosity and imagination.
💛 Why it works: Weather is physical. Kids learn through their bodies and experiencing the world in a physical way.
👦 Mandarin EXPLORER (Age 6-12)
Older children can begin describing what they notice in a month where the weather shifts so often.
You might say:
今天真热! (jīn tiān zhēn rè) — It’s a hot day!
今天有点冷! (jīn tiān yǒu diǎn lěng) — It’s a little cold today!
风很大! (fēng hěn dà) — It’s very windy!
And ask:
今天冷还是热? (jīn tiān lěng hái shì rè) — Is today a cold or a hot day?
你觉得呢? (nǐ jué dé ne) — What do you think?
Because April doesn’t stay the same, children get to use the same words again and again — in slightly different ways that will eventually make the correlation between Mandarin and weather stick.
🎲 The Daily Weather Reporter
Each morning, your child becomes the “weather reporter.” They can stand by the window and announce:
今天很热!(jīn tiān hěn rè) — It’s a very hot day!
今天风很大!(jīntiān fēng hěn dà) — It’s a very windy day!
今天下雨了!(jīn tiān xià yǔ le) — It’s raining today!
🌳 Outdoors: Noticing the Small Changes
April isn’t just about temperature, it’s about noticing subtle changes. Leaves move differently in the wind, while the sky looks different before rain.
Some days feel bright and open, others quiet and grey.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (Age 0-5)
Keep it simple and expressive:
看,风!(kàn fēng) — Look, the wind!
看,一棵树!(kàn yī kē shù) — Look, a tree!
👦 Mandarin EXPLORER (Age 6-12)
Invite a bit more curiosity:
你看到了什么? (nǐ kàn dào le shén me) — What do you see?
为什么刮风? (wèi shén me guā fēng) — Why is it windy?
🎲 The Weather Hunt
Pick something to find:
something moving (wind in trees)
something wet (after rain)
something bright (sunlight)
Say:
找一个… (zhǎo yí gè…) — Find one…
💛 Why it works: It turns observation into play.
🌧️ Everyday Conversations: Weather That Repeats
Because April shifts so often, the same phrases come back again and again, and that’s exactly what children need.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (Age 0-5)
Repeat daily:
冷吗? (lěng ma?) — Is it cold?
热吗? (rè ma?) — Is it hot?
👦 Mandarin EXPLORER (Age 6-12)
Build slightly:
我觉得很冷 (wǒ jué de hěn lěng) — I feel very cold
今天不热 (jīn tiān bù rè) — Today is not hot
🎲 Guess Tomorrow's Weather
At night, ask:
明天是冷还是热? (míng tiān shì lěng hái shì rè) — Will tomorrow be cold or hot?
Let them guess and exercise their Mandarin vocabulary
.
💛 Why it works: Prediction builds engagement and repetition.

💛 A Gentle Reminder for Parents
April doesn’t need extra effort.
The weather is already changing, the conversations are already happening.
You’re simply adding a few words to what your child already sees and feels.
If your child:
notices the wind
points at the rain
starts saying “看!” before you do,
That’s language growing.
