Language comes alive when children pretend.
Winter has settled in across much of Australia.
Some afternoons are spent rugged up indoors. Others are perfect for building blanket forts, setting up toy kitchens, or creating imaginary worlds with dinosaurs, dolls and stuffed animals.
These moments might look like "just playing” but for children, they're so much more.
Play is where they experiment, solve problems, create stories and practise language without even realising it.
This month, instead of teaching new routines, we're stepping into their world of imagination.
🧸 Time to Play Pretend
Children don't need perfect grammar to tell a story.
A teddy can become a doctor.
A cardboard box can become a rocket.
A sofa can become a mountain.
The more imagination grows, the more opportunities children have to hear and use new words naturally.
So don't worry about creating elaborate activities. Simply join the story they're already telling.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (Age 0-5)
Young children love copying everyday life activities.
Cooking.
Shopping.
Looking after babies.
Driving buses.
These familiar scenarios make wonderful opportunities for simple Mandarin.
New Play Vocabulary
玩 (wán) — Play
球 (qiú) — Ball
熊 (xióng) — Bear
娃娃 (wá wa) — Doll
飞 (fēi) — Fly
飞机 (fēi jī) — Aeroplane
火车 (huǒ chē) — Train
船 (chuán) — Boat
You might say:
我们一起玩。 (wǒ men yì qǐ wán.) — Let's play together.
飞机飞了! (fēi jī fēi le!) — The aeroplane is flying!
熊睡觉了。 (xióng shuì jiào le.) — The bear is asleep.
Children don't need to repeat every word, they just have to hear Mandarin while building stories.
🎲 Activity: Toy Talk
Choose one favourite toy and bring it to life. Instead of asking your child to memorise new words, simply narrate the toy's adventure in Mandarin.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (0–5)
Try using one or two phrases repeatedly throughout play:
熊来了! (xióng lái le!) — The bear is here!
熊睡觉了。 (xióng shuì jiào le.) — The bear is sleeping.
熊起来了! (xióng qǐ lái le!) — The bear woke up!
飞机飞了! (fēi jī fēi le!) — The aeroplane is flying!
火车开了! (huǒ chē kāi le!) — The train is moving!
球滚走了! (qiú gǔn zǒu le!) — The ball rolled away!
🧒 Mandarin EXPLORER (6–12)
Invite your child to imagine where the toy is going.
Useful phrases include:
它在哪里? (tā zài nǎ lǐ?) — Where is it?
它要去哪里? (tā yào qù nǎ lǐ?) — Where is it going?
它在找朋友。 (tā zài zhǎo péng you.) — It's looking for a friend.
它迷路了。 (tā mí lù le.) — It's lost.
它找到家了! (tā zhǎo dào jiā le!) — It found its home!
💛 Why it works: Children naturally imitate language they hear while playing.
Like what you're seeing so far?
🧒 Mandarin EXPLORER (Age 6–12)
Older children are ready to move beyond naming toys.
Now they can create adventures.
The goal isn't perfect Mandarin.
It's encouraging creativity using simple, meaningful phrases.
Storytelling Vocabulary
故事 (gù shi) — Story
开始 (kāi shǐ) — Begin
后来 (hòu lái) — Later
最后 (zuì hòu) — Finally
因为 (yīn wèi) — Because
所以 (suǒ yǐ) — So
Useful expressions:
从前…… (cóng qián...) — Once upon a time...
后来发生了什么? (hòu lái fā shēng le shén me?) — What happened next?
为什么? (wèi shén me?) — Why?
🎲 Activity: Story Builders
Take turns adding one sentence to a story.
It doesn't matter if most of the story is in English. Simply sprinkle in Mandarin phrases to help move the story along.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (0–5)
Use expressive storytelling words:
开始! (kāi shǐ!) — Begin!
来了! (lái le!) — Here it comes!
哇! (wa!) — Wow!
好大! (hǎo dà!) — So big!
没有了。 (méi yǒu le.) — It's all gone.
🧒 Mandarin EXPLORER (6–12)
Introduce simple connectors that help children build longer stories:
从前…… (cóng qián...) — Once upon a time...
然后…… (rán hòu...) — Then...
可是…… (kě shì...) — But...
因为…… (yīn wèi...) — Because...
所以…… (suǒ yǐ...) — So...
最后…… (zuì hòu...) — Finally...
You can prompt them with:
后来呢? (hòu lái ne?) — What happened next?
为什么? (wèi shén me?) — Why?
💛 Why it works: Sequencing words help children organise their ideas while building confidence.
🎭 Dress-Ups & Role Play
Whether it's pretending to be a doctor, teacher, firefighter or shopkeeper, role play gives language a real purpose.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (Age 0-5)
New vocabulary:
医生 (yī shēng) — Doctor
老师 (lǎo shī) — Teacher
帽子 (mào zi) — Hat
衣服 (yī fu) — Clothes
Try saying:
医生来了! (yī shēng lái le!) — The doctor is here!
🧒 Mandarin EXPLORER (Age 6-12)
Introduce situational role-play phrases:
请进。 (qǐng jìn.) — Come in.
有什么可以帮你? (yǒu shén me kě yǐ bāng nǐ?) — How can I help you?
请坐。 (qǐng zuò.) — Please sit.
谢谢光临。 (xiè xie guāng lín.) — Thanks for coming.
🎲 Activity: Pretend Shop
Transform your living room into a little shop using books, toys or snacks.
👶 EARLY Mandarin (0–5)
Practise greetings and simple exchanges:
欢迎! (huān yíng!) — Welcome!
苹果。 (píngguǒ.) — Apple.
饼干。 (bǐng gān.) — Biscuit.
谢谢! (xiè xie!) — Thank you!
再见! (zài jiàn!) — Goodbye!
🧒 Mandarin EXPLORER (6–12)
Encourage a simple shopping conversation:
欢迎光临! (huān yíng guāng lín!) — Welcome!
你想买什么? (nǐ xiǎng mǎi shén me?) — What would you like to buy?
我要买…… (wǒ yào mǎi...) — I'd like to buy...
一共多少钱? (yí gòng duō shǎo qián?) — How much is it altogether?
谢谢,欢迎再来! (xiè xie, huān yíng zài lái!) — Thank you, please come again!
💛 Why it works: Role play encourages spontaneous conversation in a relaxed setting.

Flashcards build vocabulary. Play builds communication.Think about it :
The teddy bear who plays doctor.
The shop built from couch cushions.
The story you make together.
When Mandarin enters their imaginative play, the pressure to be perfect drops away. Children stop treating the language as a subject, and start using it to communicate - share ideas, solve problems and connect. That’s where real confidence grows.
